With Port Royale I finally found a wonderful successor to Sid Meier's Pirates.
It is not the unrivalled economic system that makes Ascaron's economic management simulation so fascinating. And it's not the many missions that keep me playing. It's not the open game flow that gives so much fun no matter whether I'm a corsair or a merchant. It's the combination of all of the elements, the wonderful atmosphere, the attention to detail.

The smashing presentation, thrilling and entertaining missions and the ability to act nearly as freely as you wish, the varied and multifaceted structure of the game keep you at your computer all night long.
As if the marvellous graphics aren't enough to set you day-dreaming about a Carribbean holiday, Ascaron's sound crew has performed something grandiose with the in-game music.

Anybody who's looking for a valuable treasure will find it in a shop just around the corner… if the shop sells Port Royale. Ascaron have transferred the best features from Patrician II to Port Royale and added Pirates!'s atmosphere. The whole package of sound/graphics, atmosphere, motivation and storytelling is wonderful.

On the technical side Ascaron play their trump cards most powerfully. Besides the 3D-graphics during the sea battles, at other times beautiful iso-graphics are also a delight. The landscape creation, especially the water animation stands out. The waves plunge marvellously to the shore. Thick forests and lush green meadows, along with desert-like sandy shores, show the olden times in a perfect way.

Has Patrician 2 been your companion for several months ? Is your family pleased to see you again after all those long game playing evenings? In this case they must be long suffering, very long suffering, as they really do have to face up to the same catastrophe once more. You will not be leaving your computer for the next weeks.
For all games players Ascaron has created a real master piece. Daniel Dumont and his team should be chained to their seats in Gütersloh to ensure that they can provide us with games of the same calibre in the future.

Port Royale delights us with a huge game world, detailed graphics and a complete Carribbean atmosphere. With many different ways to succeed as a merchant or a pirate there is plenty of variety. And the tactically demanding sea battles will entertain even real-time strategists. Port Royale puts itself on top of the economic management simulations without any problem and leaves top-titles like "Patrician II" and "die Gilde" far behind.

Game graphics in Port Royale show their best side. The water is marvellously animated, ships rock in the waves, and especially during battle scenes one has the feeling of navigating a fully laden frigate.
As always in Ascaron-games, the German speech output is excellent, the naration is extremely professional and pulls you into the atmospheric game.
